Dream State - The Storm Within
A Memoir of Meaning, Survival, and Ordinary Weather
Before it was called illness, it was weather.
Dream State: The Storm Within follows one man’s passage through voices, visions, fear, grief, spiritual intensity, hospitalisation, suicide attempts, and the strange symbolic world that opened around him when reality began to speak in storms, signs, and shadows.
But this is not only a story of breakdown.
It is a story of meaning-making - of trying to understand what happens when perception, memory, fear, beauty, and belief begin to gather too much force.
Written with raw honesty, poetic insight, and lived-experience depth, Justin McDermott invites readers into the inner landscape of psychosis without reducing it to symptoms alone. The book asks what can be heard inside suffering, what can be rebuilt after collapse, and how a life once overwhelmed by darkness can still move toward love, purpose, and light.
At its heart, The Storm Within is a memoir of survival and return: from rupture to reflection, from isolation to connection, from inner weather to ordinary life.
For readers drawn to memoir, mental health, spirituality, creativity, and lived experience, this is a deeply personal account of surviving the mind’s most difficult weather - and learning how to live again.

When Meaning Becomes Sovereign
A Dream State Philosophy
When Meaning Becomes Sovereign is a lived-experience philosophy of meaning, psychosis, care, and return.
It begins with a simple conviction:
Meaning is one of the mind's greatest powers. But meaning becomes dangerous when it becomes sovereign.
Human beings are meaning-making creatures. We interpret, connect, imagine, remember, and search for significance. Through meaning we create culture, relationships, art, spirituality, identity, and purpose.
Yet the same capacity that enriches life can also overwhelm it.
At times, significance gathers force. Attention narrows. Certain experiences become charged with unusual importance. Patterns begin to reinforce themselves. Meaning can move from possibility to certainty, from interpretation to authority.
This book explores that territory.
Drawing on lived experience, recovery, peer practice, philosophy, psychology, creativity, and phenomenology, it examines how meaning gathers, how it can become self-enclosed, and how it may be brought back into relationship, proportion, and care.
The Dream State framework offers a language for understanding that movement through concepts such as salience, clouded consciousness, sovereignty, reachability, creative containment, grounding without humiliation, and return.
The purpose of the framework is not to eliminate meaning.
It is to keep meaning answerable.
Answerable to the body. Answerable to relationship. Answerable to reality. Answerable to humility, care, and human connection.
This philosophy does not dismiss unusual experiences, nor does it automatically elevate them. Instead, it asks how intense meaning can be held without becoming isolated, rigid, or absolute.
At its heart is a simple question:
How can we remain open to meaning without being ruled by it?
When Meaning Becomes Sovereign is offered as a compass rather than a doctrine, a framework rather than a verdict, and an invitation to approach meaning with curiosity, dignity, humility, and care.
The aim is not mastery.
The aim is return.
